Check It Out: The World Famous Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign
In a city where over-the-top man-made tourist attractions are seemingly produced annually, the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign should be nicknamed “Old Faithful”. The Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign is one of the most visited and photographed landmarks in a city that hosts 39.2 million visitors a year. It is a classic, a cultural icon, and now it’s recognized on the National Register for Historic Places.
The Las Vegas Sign was “born” in May 1959. It was designed by Betty Willis whom received $4,000 for her work, and built by Western Neon. It is 25 feet tall. Currently, YESCO owns the sign and even pays the monthly power bill to keep it lit at night. Wondering how much the average power bill is? Answer: under $60.
The Las Vegas Sign is stepping out into the digital world too! It has its’ own website http://lasvegassignphotos.com/ where people can submit pictures of themselves in front of it. It has its’ own Twitter page: http://twitter.com/lasvegassign where it tweets updates about whats going on in Vegas, a Wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Welcome_to_Fabulous_Las_Vegas_sign, and is highlighted in many Google Maps searches.
